THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: No more boring long-winding speeches or dry theoretical accounts occupying party publications.

No more outdated media strategies that alienate the masses; rather a friendly and cordial approach, and finally adopting themes and ideas that appeal to Gen Z.

These could well encompass the new approach the CPM is putting forth, as it prepares to rejuvenate the rank and file, after its miserable electoral performance.

As the CPM gears up for the three-day extended state committee meeting for deep introspection and course correction, the document to be presented before the meet would focus on a slew of steps that would alter the very style of functioning that the leadership has followed for long.

Instead of a leadership change, the extended committee would focus on improving and correcting different aspects in its style of functioning along with initiatives to reach out to sections hitherto left untouched, and formulate strategies to explore new arenas. The party has already begun preparing the document for the extended committee.

The extended committee from September 13 to 15 in Kozhikode, will be the first of its kind introspection in state CPM. Both party leaders and cadres are hopeful of bringing in a few changes.

“There will definitely be changes in the style of functioning. We can no longer accept the style that has continued for long. Each of us has done our bit to ensure that a change in the style gets reflected on ground. But to what extent other changes will happen - like personality changes at the leadership level - remains to be seen,” said a central committee member.

The recent CC report on elections was highly critical of the state leadership. So it is unlikely to have further criticism in the new document being prepared.

Instead it would look at what needs to be done in different sectors — in party organisation, publications, media strategy, party education, functioning of different mass organisations etc.

The document is also expected to explore sectors that need to be addressed like reaching out to Gen Z.

“It’s a fact that the case pertaining to Veena T damaged us in the polls. Similarly certain leaders’ arrogant behaviour and petty corruption too alienated the masses.

Some specific incidents like the one where a senior made a remark during an electoral convention in Konni were widely used against us. We need to keep all these in mind while preparing the report,” said a leader.

The leadership is well aware that the Left’s social base has been majorly affected. A remedial-oriented approach on how to win back the masses would form the crux of discussions.

“This report would be on matters that need to be corrected...what needs to be done in the current scenario to rejuvenate party activities, hindrances - both political and organisational - that need to be resolved, and a future action plan would be key areas. Unlike mere speculations, it’s not about leadership changes - be it the state secretary or LDF convener, said a secretariat member.

The report for the extended committee is expected to be finalised at the secretariat meet on September 8.
