Three newborn babies died after a fire broke out at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the Amravati District Women’s Hospital in Maharashtra in the early hours of Monday, officials said.
The fire reportedly broke out around 3.30 am following an explosion in a ventilator on the third floor of the government hospital, where 39 newborns were undergoing treatment.
Doctors, nurses and other hospital staff launched an emergency evacuation and moved the infants to safety. Six newborns were shifted to a super-speciality hospital for further treatment.
Three infants, however, suffered severe burns and smoke inhalation and died, officials said.
The cause of the ventilator explosion and the fire was yet to be ascertained. An investigation into the incident was underway.
