BHUBAESWAR: FOR ALL the party souls, here’s a chance to flaunt their dancing skills and be the star of the evening. Those of you, who really want to learn how to hip hop, lock, pop and dance in contemporary style— in ways that will make all the head-bangers at the discos go green with envy, here’s some news. Divine Dance and Music academy, a Bhubaneswar-based dance-training institute has lined up an exciting workshop wherein you can learn the basics of these dance forms in just 10 days. And sashaying to the beats of the music at the dance workshop at Sailashree Vihar is locking and popping expert Harihar Dash.

With popular cinema embracing hip hop, contemporary, locking and popping ever more ardently, as are reality dance shows on the telly such as Dance India Dance and India’s Got Talent, the dance forms have sneaked their way into the hearts of the people.

“Dance is an increasingly popular way to chill out for a growing number of urban Indians and these dances have caught the fancy of the younger crowd,” says Harihar. The finalist of India’s Got Talent (season 2), Harihar is overwhelmed at the response he has received for the dance workshop in the city.

Packed with doses of fun and energy, the classes are designed to train the beginners from the basic steps. “It’s not just a great relaxation technique and an addictive stress buster but also helps burn calories. Dance helps you to be more aware of your body. Timing and coordination is the key factor here,” he says.

Hip-hop is a fusion of ‘breaking,’ ‘locking’ and ‘popping.’ It stands out from other dance forms as it is often improvisational in nature or referred to as ‘free style’ and another vital style called ‘Battle’.

Similarly, contemporary dance is characterised by its versatility. “Contemporary can be danced to almost any style of music, or united with other dance forms to create new styles of movement. Contemporary seeks to work with the natural alignment of the body, and is therefore safe and accessible for beginners,” says Harihar. At the same time, the ease of movement promoted by contemporary dance technique allows experienced dancers to push new boundaries of body movement.

The workshop, which began on December 2, will continue till December 11 and the classes are being held in four shifts every day. All the participants will be awarded with certificates at the end of the workshop with the help of which, they can learn the intermediate level of these dance forms at any dance institute across India.
