PURI: Experts from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) examined the garbha gruha (sanctum sanctorum) of the Jagannath Temple as soon as the deities left for the nine-day sojourn to Gundicha Temple on Tuesday. The ASI is responsible for the preservation and conservation of this 12th century edifice since 1974. Every year during this period, the experts inspect the sanctum sanctorum and place their reports with the statutory committee.  Earlier, experts after observing minor cracks and fungus on the walls of garbha gruha had suggested installation of exhaust fans to expel the humid air emanating from hot mahaprasad and other offerings. This is weakening the inner walls, the experts had opined.  Though a number of years have passed, the administration is yet to give clearance for the work.  Meanwhile, artisans are working over time to fix the silver artwork and plates on the Kalahaat Dwar, one of the most decorated doors of the temple. About 300 kg of pure silver was used for making these decorative plates. A devotee has borne the cost of the ongoing work, estimated to be Rs 1 crore.

Ananda Baazar (mahaprasad market) inside the temple complex is also being built afresh to accommodate thousands of devotees during dining time. The work is nearing completion. Other necessary amenities like provision for drinking water, lighting and waste disposal system are being put in place.
