NAYAGARH: With drains being planned on either side of NH 57, rainwater overflowing on to the main road of the town may soon become a thing of the past. The two kilometre long drain would mark the exit for rainwater at Pratap Prasad on the outskirts of the town.

Local MLA and Government Deputy Chief Whip Arun Sahoo on Wednesday laid the foundation stone for the first phase work on the 16,000 metre long drain that would be taken up from Medical Square to Sinduria.

It would come up at an estimated cost of Rs 1.25 crore.

Addressing a meeting on NAC office premises, Sahoo said out of the ` 5 crore allotted for construction of drains in urban areas of the state, Nayagarh has received ` 1.25 crore. Plantation would be taken on either side of the NH from Jagannath Temple to Sinduria along with a footpath, he added.

Presenting the status report on NH work underway in the district, Bhubaneswar NH Division Executive Engineer Jaladhar Behera said that out of the 299.90 km from Khurda to Balangir, only 89.809 km from Bijipur to Banigochha falls under Nayagarh district.

Thirty-nine km long road (Bijipur to Nayagarh and Maichheli to Daspalla) has been upgraded to double lane at a cost of ` 60 crore, while the stretch from Nayagarh town to Maichheli has been repaired at a cost of ` 1.503 crore.

Besides, upgradation proposal for the 35 km road from Daspalla to Banigochha under World Bank projects has got the official nod. The work would be completed within two years, he said.

The road from Medical Square to Jagannath Temple would cost ` 50 lakh.
