BHUBANESWAR: As expected, the Opposition on Tuesday brought its  ‘Naveen hatao’ campaign to the Assembly on the Vedanta University issue.

Training their guns on Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for the serious irregularities committed by his Government during land acquisition for the proposed university, the Opposition members said he has no moral right to continue after the High Court order. The Congress members stalled the proceedings during second half showing placards.

Raising the issue during zero hour, Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh said the Lokpal had pointed out the illegalities committed by the Government in the acquisition of Jagannath temple land. Now the High Court has exposed the Government. The court has pointed its finger at the Chief Minister, Singh charged.

Keeping the high tradition of the party, Singh said several Congress leaders, including Ashok Chavan, resigned without any court order. Despite clear indictment of the Chief Minister by the High Court, there is no sign of his stepping down, he added.

Dismissing the allegations of the ruling party members that the BJP as a coalition partner in the previous Government was a party to the decision, Leader of the BJP Legislature Party K V Singhdeo said the Vedanta University Bill was passed by this Government.

“It was the Chief Minister who constituted the committee for facilitating land acquisition for Vedanta University,” he recalled and said no BJP ministers were involved in the process.

Even as the ruling party is trying to take cover under the Supreme Court order to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the 2G Spectrum issue and other scams in Maharashtra and Karnataka, Singh Deo said in none of the cases is there any adverse court remark.

In Vedanta University case, the Lokpal and the High Court have given clear cut orders which are against the Government.

He dared the treasury benches to ask their leader to step down honouring the High Court order.

Intervening in the discussion, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Raghunath Mohanty said the Government is prepared to discuss all issues. Instead of raising it during zero hour, the Opposition should have brought it in a different format, he said.
