Every work of art that has come up at the 26th annual exhibition of B K College of Art and Craft is an indicator of times to come. More than 50 paintings and 10 sculptures, all works of students, are on show at the Jaydev Bhawan here.

Though paintings dominate the exhibition, a good number of bronze, fibre and wood relief, sculptures and photographs form part of the collection. Striking sculptures in sheet metal, wood, stone and plaster of Paris stand out.

The theme of the paintings ranges from the contemporary to the abstract. Realism and the abstract, portrayed in vibrant canvasses and other art forms, make for an absorbing collection at the three-day exhibition. The students have experimented with a variety of mediums - oil, acrylic and water colours. While many have explored the abstract, realistic portrayals on a range of themes also manifest the social thinking among the students. Some of the popular themes have been global warming, child labour, addiction/smoking and poverty.

Many paintings have Buddha as their central character while others have worked on Patta Chitra too. One particular painting, portraying human plight and greed through playing cards is a big attraction.

Some sculptures made of clay and finished with fibreglass are placed amid the surrounding flora lending an aesthetic touch to the works of art.

The graphic art portraits use processes such as lithography and screen-printing for visual effect.

According to Kumari Swati, a student of visual art, “Art gives me the platform to express facets of nature as form and colour, which words can never describe.”

The exhibition is on till Friday.
