Martyred Ghess family goes unsung

Even as State Government professes respect to martyrs, the district administration seems hardly bothered to highlight the deeds of martyrs of Ghess family.

The function on Monday, their martyrdom day, will remain confined to paying floral tributes and a formal meeting. Though people have been demanding competitions among schoolchildren to highlight the deeds of the Ghess, no such measures have been taken so far.  Locals are afraid the same tradition of neglect will be followed this year also.

The family of Ghess Zamindar, Madhav Singh Bariha alias Madho Singh, had attained martyrdom fighting against the British. Madho Singh was hanged to death in 1858. He captured the main architect of the British game plan, Captain Woodbridge.

The headless nude body of the Captain hanging from tree in Singhora Ghati had sent shivers down the spines of the British soldiers. Madho Singh was supported by his sons Hatee Singh, Kunjel Singh, Vairi Singh, Airi Singh and son-in-law Narain Singh. Even though his dear ones met with violent end, fiery  Madho did not relent till he was hanged.
