Even as the India Meteorological Department announced that south-west monsoon has covered the entire State by Monday, people waited for the rains with bated breath in coastal Odisha.

With scattered rainfall, the weather office said the outlook for the next five to six days is good for showers. “Today, there might not have been reports of showers across many places barring Jharsuguda, but there has been good rainfall in many places in the last 24 hours,” IMD Director, Odisha, S C Sahu said.

During the last 24 hours, a number of districts received showers prompting the weather office to declare that monsoon has advanced to major parts. ]

Ambabani in Bargarh received 195 mm rain followed by 55 mm at Bijepur and 53.1 mm at Laikera. Similarly, Boudh, Kandhamal, Cuttack, Puri, Dhenkanal, Koraput and Nabarangpur districts received rains ranging from 20 to 40 mm.

The cyclonic circulation required to trigger rains has not happened, but conditions are favourable for the showers and this might happen over the next 24 hours, Sahu said, adding that the outlook for next seven days indicates good rainfall over the State.

Meanwhile, the Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) currently passes through Okha, Ahmedabad, Panchmari, Pendra, Ambikapur, Ranchi, Berhampur, Jalpaiguri and Gangtok.
