Cheated by the chit fund organisations and non-banking financial companies (NBFCs), the investors of Balasore district took to the streets on Tuesday demanding refund of their money and legal action against those organisations.

Hundreds of investors led by the activists of Rajya Adivasi Harijan Samaj Kalyan Samiti staged an agitation before the collectorate demanding stern action against the promoters of the fraud companies.

The depositors took out a rally from the railway station square to collectorate where they staged the demonstration besides submitting a memorandum addressed to the Governor and Chief Minister.

Sources said over two lakh poor and unsuspecting people of the district had deposited their hard earned money with these organisations which had promised them good return within a short span of time.

Most of these organisations are either sealed or have downed their shutters after May 10 joint raids by the police and Crime Branch. While police have arrested at least 40 officials of the NBFCs and seized their documents, the depositors are sacred of losing their money.

“If the district administration fails to take any action against the chit fund organisations, we would intensify our stir and sit on hunger strike till our demands are met,” said State president of the Samiti Damodar Das.

In Jaleswar, a separate demonstration was staged by the block unit of BJP. The meeting was attended by BJP district president Madan Mohan Dutta, block president Samir Kumar Patra and other office bearers of the party. They later submitted a 13-point charter of demands to the Chief Minister through the local tehsildar.
