The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Bhubaneswar, has opened doors to students who have completed their diploma after class X or degree holders in engineering to opt for lateral entry to some of its programmes from the present session 2013-14.

It would provide lateral entry to diploma or degree holders in engineering in the third semester of its bachelor of Fashion Design, Textile Design, Fashion & Lifestyle Accessory Design programmes for the first time.

However, such students need to compete in an all-India entrance examination for being considered for lateral entry and the admission is purely on merit basis. To inform students about it, the NIFT recently held an open-house programme and welcomed aspirants to campus visit.

Those applying for lateral entry need to have a three-year diploma or degree after 10 or Plus Two in courses related to fashion or fashion technology like apparels, textiles, accessories, apparel technology, leather, home science, handloom technology, communication, graphic design, industrial design, interior design, multimedia design or technology ad engineering from the Central, State Government institutes or AICTE, AIU, UGC, Government-recognised institute, college, university. Those with a science background with a diploma or degree in engineering may also apply.

‘’The lateral admission has been opened to add a diverse opinion in the classroom. Students who complete their diploma after class X can take admission in the undergraduate programmes at NIFT and join as regular students in the second year,’’ says NIFT-Bhubaneswar Director KCS Ray.

Candidates for lateral entry can fill forms online in the NIFT website and submit the forms before June 17. The written examination and interview will be held on June 28. The forms are also available at the institute.

Admissions will be based on an all-India level test, followed by an interview on June 28. ‘’The written test will have 80 percent weightage and the interview 20 percent. The test and interview will check the aptitude of students in creativity and ability to think out-of-the-box,’’ adds Ray.

Recently, NIFT-Bhubaneswar had announced launching two continuing education programmes from the 2013-14 academic session commencing in August.

‘’We have decided to start one-year continuing education programmes in fashion retail management and garment export merchandising management,’’ says Ray. The institute will also offer five short-term summer programmes during June and July. While ‘’writing research papers and research methodology’’ will be a two-day course, classes for computer-aided textile design, fashion styling and sketching, and surface technique and lifestyle accessories will span a week. The retail store operation and sales promotion programme would go on for two weeks.
