The first 350-MW unit of GMR Kamalanga Energy Limited (GKEL) became commercial operational on Wednesday.
The unit is a part of the 4x350-MW thermal power plant that GMR Group is establishing at Kamalanga under Odapada block of Dhenkanal district.
The project, situated at 50 km from district headquarters, is underway in two phases - 3x350-MW and 1x350-MW. GKEL’s first unit is the GMR Group’s second coal-based power plant to be declared commercially operational. The Group’s first 300-MW unit was commissioned at Warora in Maharashtra in March.
Power produced from GKEL’s first unit has been offered to Gridco Limited in Odisha as per the long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) inked with it pursuant to the MoU signed with Government of Odisha.
Two other units of 350-MW each in the first phase is likely to be completed by August 2013.
When fully commissioned, the GKEL power plant would provide power to Odisha, Bihar, Haryana and
some other parts of the country.
Commenting on the development, GM Rao, Chairman of GMR Group said, “The commencement of commercial generation from the first 350-MW unit of our 1400-MW coal-based project at Kamalanga signals a new phase of expansion of GMR Group’s power generation capacity.”
