The aftermath of Phailin paints a picture of destruction and havoc all across Nayagarh. Besides, the cyclone has triggered flood in six tributaries, leaving people helpless.

Officials in the District Control Room said as per the preliminary assessment, there has been a loss of property and crops of over Rs 151 crores.

Three persons died in the calamity in the district. While one in each of Ranpur and Bhapur blocks died in the cyclone, another succumbed to snake bite in Salajharia village under Khandapara block. Paddy and sugarcane crop in 34,340 hectares (ha) has been destroyed. As many as 21,823 houses including 20,539 kutcha and 1,284 thatched houses have been damaged.

Tributaries of Mahanadi - Kusumi, Kuanria, Brutang, Duant, Lunijhara and Dahuka - are in spate, affecting a population of 32,281 in 38 villages under 17 gram panchayats in Khandapara, Nayagarh and Bhapur blocks.

District administration had evacuated 46,565 people from 1,702 villages before PHAILIN struck the district and relocated them in 567 temporary shelters. They were provided dry and cooked food.

The district received 201.47 mm of rainfall on Friday and Saturday. Thousands of trees were uprooted blocking communication. A breach occurred on bank of Sagar Tank in Old Town here after a large tree was uprooted. Power supply snapped since Friday night, however, it was restored in Nayagarh town on Sunday.

Teak plantations in Godipada area under Ranpur block and Suklagadia village in Nayagarh block have been destroyed. Mushroom farms in several villages in Nayagarh block have been badly hit.
