Four persons were injured when their houses in Aladigaon village of Purushottampur block collapsed following heavy rains on Sunday.

Although the water level in major rivers was below the danger level, many villages in Ganjam district continued to be marooned. Roads in Bhanjanagar, Patrapur, Purusotampur and Rangeilunda were inundated under five feet of water.

While embankments of the rivers breached at many places, approach roads to the bridges in Digapahandi, Purushottampur, Patrapur, Kabisuryanagar, Polosara, Belaguntha, Khalikote and Sanakhemundi were washed away.

Sources in the district administration said Government relief has been provided to all BPL cardholders and survey of the affected non-cardholders is on.

According to Rangeilunda Block Development Officer, 356 families in Indrakhi, 1165 families in Markandi and 279 families in Garampeta have been provided relief till now.

Water-borne Diseases

Two persons, one each in Mantridi village under Rangeilunda block and Venketraipali under Hinjili block, have died of dysentery while 27 others have been affected by the disease in the last one week.

Of those affected, 10 belong to Purushottampur and 17 others are from Hinjili block.

However, the district health officials expressed ignorance over the deaths. They said a team of doctors will be sent to the affected areas.

Embezzlement

At Banpur, police seized 18 gunny bags of rice which were being diverted to open market on Sunday. Three persons were arrested.

Police said they were repacking the relief rice in 25 kg sacks in Ward 18 of the city to send them for black-marketing.

On a tip off, police raided the Ward and made the seizure.
