BERHAMPUR: The 12-year-old girl, Banita Nayak, who had set herself ablaze, died on Thursday.
The girl, a Class VII student, had taken the extreme step on Wednesday after her parents expressed their inability to give her `10 for purchase of pencil and paper. The incident took place at Jokobandh in Aska.
The severely burnt girl was subsequently admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in a critical condition.
Sources said the girl asked her father Bijayananda Nayak for `10. Bijayananda, a daily wager, expressed his inability to meet the demand immediately, but assured to pay the amount later.
Disappointed with her father’s reply, a miffed Banita went to the backyard of the house, doused herself with kerosene and set afire.
Banita was the second among four siblings.
Two Cops in Vigilance Net
Anti-corruption sleuths of Berhampur nabbed two police personnel red-handed while they were receiving bribe from a resident of Kodola on Thursday.
Superintendent of Police (SP), Vigilance, Manoranjan Panda said a case was registered against Balaram Nayak of Kodola under Beguniapada police limits. Sub-inspector Bhagirathi Prusty and ASI Balaram Rout of the police station demanded `4,000 from Nayak to forward the case diary to court.
Nayak reported the matter to Vigilance officials who laid the trap on Thursday and caught both the cops red-handed. The two cops will be forwarded to the court, said the SP. The residential quarters of both the policemen are being searched and the investigation is on, he added.
