BHUBANESWAR: Responding to a call from Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, all the 10 BJP legislators in Odisha on Friday decided to surrender their subsidised LPG connections and buy the cooking gas at market price.
All the members of the BJP Legislature Party unanimously decided to give up their subsidised connection, said Leader of the Legislature Party Basanta Panda.
Meanwhile, state BJP president K V Singhdeo and Panda have changed their connection into a non-subsidised domestic ones.
“We appreciate your request for opting out of LPG subsidy. It truly demonstrate your care and concern towards the less privileged. Your example will surely motivate millions,” said the Indian Oil Corporation in separate communications to Singhdeo and Panda.
In an appeal to the rich and affluent people who could afford to buy market price LPG, the Union Minister had requested them to voluntarily give up subsidised connection.
“Volunteering to give up LPG subsidy amounts to contributing for national development & empowerment of poor people who will be the beneficiary”, Pradhan had tweeted on January 8.
Pradhan told Express that he has requested his colleagues, MPs, MLAs, bureaucrats and others who were in a position to afford non-subsidised LPG cylinder to surrender their subsidised connection. This has started yielding results.
Consumers are currently entitled to twelve 14.2-kg cylinders in a year at subsidised rates. A subsidised 14.2-kg cylinder is currently available at Rs.430.50 in the city.
