SALEPUR: A man was shot dead by four miscreants near Bali market under Gurudijhatia police limits in Cuttack district in broad daylight on Tuesday. The deceased has been identified as Kishore Kumar Mohanty (38) alias Jitu of Bali village.
Sources said Mohanty was sitting in front of a shop at Bali market at around 9 am when the miscreants came on two motorcycles and started talking to him. The interaction turned into hot exchange of words following which one of the miscreants opened fire at Mohanty.
Mohanty, who narrowly escaped the gun shot, started running on NH-55 towards Bali High School. The miscreants chased him for a distance of 30 metres and shot him point-blank on the head and ear, killing him on the spot. Soon after, the miscreants fled on their bikes.
On being informed by locals, senior police officials including Additional SP, Cuttack (Rural) Krushna Chandra Samal rushed to spot and seized the body. The body was sent to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack for post-mortem. A live bullet has been seized from the spot, said IIC of Gurudijhatia police station, Ashok Kumar Das.
Meanwhile, Mohanty’s mother Chandra Bati has filed an FIR at Gurudijhatia police station alleging that her son was murdered by Rajib Lochan Das and his associates over old rivalry.
Mohanty’s wife Kalpana alleged that following a dispute during Holi, some people had threatened to kill her husband within three months. Though she had gone to Gurudijhatia police station to file an FIR after the threat, police had declined to file the complaint, Kalpana alleged.
