PURI:The Sagadi (cart) carrying the Daru for Lord Balabhadra’s new idol reached Jagannath temple in Puri on Tuesday. Amidst chanting of hymns, the Daru wrapped in seven layers of Patta (silk) and fastened to the cart with Pattabasunga (a special rope) was taken to Koilibaikuntha inside the temple by the servitors and devotees through north gate. It was then placed inside the Darugruha, a special enclosure where the new idols of the Trinity and Lord Sudarshan would be carved.

The Banajagis, who had taken rest at Alamchandi temple on the outskirts of the pilgrim city on Monday night, resumed pulling of the cart on Tuesday morning and it took them two hours to reach Jagannath temple.

As per the Nabakalebara manual, the Patimahapatra would offer ‘bhog’ everyday to the Daru till the construction begins. Construction of new idols would begin after arrival of the remaining two Darus in the enclosure.

Fourteen Banajagis were engaged in bringing the ‘Daru’ for Lord Balabhadra from Sarala temple in Kanakpur village of Jagatsinghpur district to Puri.
