Black spots to check road accidents identified at Sambalpur in Odisha

In a bid to check road accidents, Sambalpur district police identified 55 black spots on different roads across the district and suggested remedial measures.

SAMBALPUR: In a bid to check road accidents, Sambalpur district police identified 55 black spots on different roads across the district and suggested remedial measures.

The black spots are mostly located on National Highway and State Highway stretches passing through the district besides Sambalpur city roads.
Informing this, District Superintendent of Police, Sambalpur, Sanjeev Arora said the district police conducted a detailed study and identified the black spots. They have also prepared a report containing the accident data between January 1, 2015 and June 30, 2017 besides reasons and remedial measures to check accidents.

He also said they will submit the report to the Transport Commissioner-cum-Chairman, State Transport Authority, Odisha and National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to implement the remedial measures.
As per reports, 856 accidents have occurred at the identified 55 black spots within a period of two and a half years between January 1, 2015 and June 30, 2017 while 194 people died and 663 others sustained injuries in the accidents.

Some of the black spots, where the frequency of road mishap is more during the period, include Sason bypass on Sambalpur-Rourkela State Highway 10, Godbhaga Chowk on National Highway (NH) 6, Berhampura Chowk and Hindola Ghat on NH 55 in Charmal area, Kumuraguda, Saida Chowk, Patrapali Chowk and Junani Chowk on NH 49 in Kuchinda area of the district.

The district police cited rash and negligent driving, blind curves on the road besides other reasons behind the accidents. This apart, the district police suggested different types of remedial measures for different black spots, including construction of flyover, speed breakers, retro reflector on road, traffic signage, traffic signal lights, no parking zones, blind curves to be earmarked, sufficient lighting, road signage signalling presence of educational institutions, speed limit and message against drunken driving.
Sanjeev Arora said frequent road accidents are claiming  many valuable lives. If remedial measures are implemented, accidents at the black spots could be contained to a great extent, he added.
