PHULBANI: Inaugurated three years ago, the dedicated market complex for non-vegetarian food on the outskirts of Phulbani town is yet to become operational.
The market, located near the FCI square, was inaugurated on the local self-governance day in 2022 with an investment of about Rs 2 crore to centralise the scattered fish and meat shops across the town into one dedicated location. However, the facility has failed to serve its intended purpose and is already showing signs of neglect due to its disuse.
Sources said the complex has become a gathering place for antisocial elements. With the market yet to function, fish and meat vendors still operate in various areas across the town. Currently, the AJO high school playground is occupied by fish sellers, leaving local students without a proper place to play.
Once operational, all fish and meat vendors will be legally required to relocate to this designated complex. The Phulbani municipality has warned that fines will be imposed on anyone who buys or sells non-veg products outside the specified area in the town. The relocation is expected to reduce congestion in the town.
Earlier, the municipality had issued notices instructing all non-vegetarian traders to move to the new complex. However, the vendors refused to comply for several reasons. First, the market is too far from the main town, raising concerns about the sustainability of their business. Moreover, the area beside the complex has become a major dumping ground for the town’s waste, causing foul odours and an unhygienic environment. Additionally, the complex lacks drinking water facilities and storage space.
Municipality executive officer Samaresh Mohanty said the issues regarding drinking water supply and storage are being addressed. He assured that the non-vegetarian market will be made operational soon.
