BHUBANESWAR: The state government has initiated plans for the comprehensive development of Chilika lake region, including the Kalijai temple and Satapada, with a focus on creating a world-class, environmentally-sustainable tourism destination while preserving the lake’s unique ecosystem.
The road map was discussed at a high-level meeting chaired by deputy chief minister Pravati Parida and Works minister Prithiviraj Harichandan at Lok Seva Bhawan on Tuesday.
The meeting deliberated on preparing a comprehensive master plan for the development of Chilika lake, Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon and Ramsar site, along with the Kalijai temple and Satapada tourism circuit.
Parida stressed the need to strengthen tourism infrastructure and visitor amenities while developing the surrounding areas into attractive destinations. She emphasised positioning Chilika as a globally-recognised tourism destination offering world-class hospitality.
Harichandan said the development strategy will prioritise environmental sustainability by protecting Chilika’s fragile eco-system, biodiversity and natual beauty while ensuring the holistic development of the Kalijai shrine and surrounding areas.
He also called for a comprehensive infrastructure plan including improved road connectivity to drive regional growth.
During the meeting, various agencies presented conceptual development plans featuring upgraded roads, modern jetties, parking facilities, bird-viewing points, cycling tracks, roller-skating zones, water sports, boating and other adventure tourism activities.
The proposals also include tree houses, trekking trails, open food courts, picnic zones and installation of artworks showcasing the state’s rich cultural heritage to enhance visitors’ experience. The meeting further discussed the construction of a Greenfield road connecting Gopalpur and Bahuda, along with promoting tourism development in the adjoining areas.
Senior officials, including OBCC managing director Anupam Saha, Tourism director Dipankar Mahapatra, Puri collector Divyajyoti Parida, Endowments commissioner Satyanarayan Sadangi, engineer-in-chief (civil) Satyabrata Behera, engineer-in-chief (buildings) Priyabrata Samantaray, chief engineer Trinath Behera, members of the Kalijai Temple Trust Board and temple servitors were present in the meeting.
