BHUBANESWAR: The government railway police (GRP) on Friday arrested two persons in connection with the brutal assault of a mentally-challenged youth at Bhubaneswar railway station recently.

The incident had reportedly occurred on August 11 night but came to light only after a video of the same surfaced on social media on Thursday.

The GRP officials said the victim was mentally-challenged and had tried to vandalise some shops on the night of August 11. One of the shopkeeper, whose store was vandalised, attacked the youth in rage. A few others including some passengers also joined him in assaulting the youth.

In the viral video, the victim was seen beaten mercilessly by several persons. They tied his hand and laid him down on the platform while showering blows and kicks on him.

The GRP had registered a case this connection. An official said two persons including a shopkeeper and a passenger were arrested and forwarded to the court on Friday.

“It is yet to be confirmed if the victim’s hands had been tied. We are examining the video footage to identify others involved in the assault,” police said.

Issuing a clarification, East Coast Railway (ECoR) informed that the incident was attended to by the GRP Bhubaneswar and necessary action has been initiated. “The matter is presently under investigation by the agencies as per law. ECoR is extending all necessary cooperation in the matter,” it stated.
