BARIPADA: Mayurbhanj police on Saturday arrested a sub-inspector on charges of harassing his wife over dowry.

The accused, Pravat Nayak (35) of Puri’s Bramhagiri area, was attached to Baripada Town police station.

Police said Nayak was in a relationship with Sajani Biswal (30) and they decided to marry. However, Nayak claimed he had financial issues following which the woman reportedly provided him Rs 10 lakh in cash. Her family further reportedly sent Rs 1.79 lakh to Nayak.

After getting the money, Nayak allegedly stopped talking to Sajani. When she went to Baripada and met Nayak at the police station on April 1, he allegedly scolded her and threatened to kill her. Later, following intervention by social workers, the dispute was resolved and the duo married on June 12 at Kuliana without informing Nayak’s parents, police said.

After the marriage, Sajani initially stayed at a hotel and later moved to a rented house in Baripada after facing financial difficulties. She alleged that despite making repeated calls, Nayak did not respond.

She subsequently lodged a complaint against her husband at Baripada Town police station and also approached the Mayurbhanj SP.

Additional SP Deepak Kumar Gochhayat said a case was registered against the SI under charges related to dowry harassment, mental harassment, rape and attempt to murder. He was produced in court and remanded in judicial custody. Further investigation is on, he added.
