JEYPORE: Normal life was severely hit across Koraput on Sunday as incessant rain for the past three days triggered waterlogging, disrupted traffic and affected business activities in several parts of the district.
Markets and business establishments remained closed in Jeypore, Koraput, Sunabeda and Kotpad as heavy rainfall lashed these areas. Roads wore a deserted look, while vehicular movement was severely affected on NH-26 and several inter-state highways.
Major rivers including Indravati, Saberi, Kolab, Saptadhara, Patali and Surli along with their tributaries, were reported to be in spate following the continuous downpour. The rising water levels have raised concerns over possible flooding in low-lying areas.
According to the district emergency operation centre, Koraput recorded a total rainfall of 968.2 mm on Sunday, with an average of 69.16 mm across the 14 blocks.
Semiliguda recorded the highest rainfall at 144.6 mm, followed by Dasmantpur (95 mm), Borigumma (86.4 mm), Kotpad (77 mm), Jeypore (76.8 mm), Koraput (71.8 mm) and Laxmipur (67.6 mm). Other areas also received substantial rainfall with Nandapur recording 53.3 mm, Kundra 54 mm, Pottangi 51.2 mm, Boipariguda 46 mm and Lamtaput 45.3 mm.
With the rain continuing, the district administration has alerted block and revenue officials, particularly in Jeypore, Borigumma, Kundra and Kotpad blocks, to closely monitor the flood situation and remain prepared to respond to emergencies.
Officials have been asked to keep a close watch on rivers, vulnerable roads and low-lying areas and take necessary precautionary measures in case of further rise in water levels. Residents in flood-prone areas have been advised to remain alert and follow instructions issued by the administration.
