BHUBANESWAR: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday described the imposition of Emergency in 1975 as a dark chapter in the history of Indian democracy and paid tribute to those who resisted the authoritarian rule.
In a post on X, on the occasion of the 51st year of the Emergency, Majhi said it was imposed due to the power-hungry and dictatorial mindset of a single family, resulting in the suspension of fundamental rights, imprisonment of lakhs of political activists and patriots and curbs on press freedom.
He said the day is being observed across the country as ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ to remind the people of their constitutional rights and the importance of safeguarding democratic institutions.
Paying homage to the ‘Democracy Warriors’ who opposed the Emergency and endured imprisonment, the chief minister said the Constitution’s dignity and sovereignty are being protected under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi. He urged the people to reaffirm their commitment to constitutional supremacy and democratic values. The state unit of the BJP also observed the day as ‘Black Day’ at its state headquarters here.
