VELLORE: Over 1.4 lakh candidates (1.16 lakh boys and 32,620 girls) would appear for the VIT Engineering Entrance Examination (VITEEE) this year, scheduled to be held on April 18, vying for the 2,150 seats in the B Tech stream.
For the first time, VIT would hold the entrance test outside the country, where 68 candidates from the United Arab Emirates would appear for the test in Dubai.
Chancellor G Viswanathan said that the plea to hold entrance exam in Dubai had come from the Indian community there who had expressed the desire to join the merit scheme.
Back home, the exams would be held in 189 centres in 71 cities across all states except, Jammu and Kashmir, Nagaland and Mizoram. Nineteen more centres have been added this year.
Andhra Pradesh tops the list of maximum number of candidates of 29,000 plus appearing for the VITEEE, followed by Uttar Pradesh (24,419), Bihar (14,602), Rajasthan (11,475) and Tamil Nadu (9,357). A total of 83,000 plus students from the Hindi speaking belt will appear this time. In Delhi alone, 11,678 students will appear for the exam while in Vellore, it will be 2,626.
Viswanathan said that many of the students from other states take up special coaching for various entrance exams leading to engineering courses, including VIT, while there was no such requirement in TN, which was the reason behind less aspirants from this state. He noted that there was no change in the exam pattern from that of last year.
