CHENNAI: The State government should come forward to support initiatives aimed at translating works from other languages into Tamil, Chairman, Law Commission, A R Lakshmanan said here on Sunday.
In his address after giving away the ‘Nalli Thisai Ettum’ life-time achievement awards, he said literary and legal works should be translated into Tamil from other languages.
The Central government had set up a new institution for getting translated into Hindi a huge compendium of legal texts and Acts.
“A similar initiative is needed in Tamil Nadu and our government here should support it,” he said. Not only legal texts, but all other good literary works merit translation.
Patrons of literature and arts like Nalli Kuppusami Chettiar must come forward to lend a helping hand.
‘Thisai Ettum,’ is a literary journal that has been giving away awards for eminent translators with the patronage of Nalli Kuppuswami Chettiar since 2003.
‘Nalli Thisai Ettum’ awards were given to ten persons for translating Tamil literary works into other languages and vice-versa.
A V Subramanian and A G Ethirajulu received life-time achievement awards. M Boopathi, Gomathi Narayanan, Swati H Padmanabah and seven others got Nalli Thisai Ettum awards.
