TIRUMANGALAM:  AIADMK General Secretary Jayalalithaa today alleged that the ruling DMK had hatched a conspiracy to deprive her party of a victory in the January 9 byelections to the Tirumangalam assembly constituency.

Addressing a campaign meeting at Chekkanoorani near here, she said that the DMK in "collaboration" with some retired officials had made arrangements to tamper with some Electronic Voting Machines to "gain advantage" during the polling.

She asked the election officials to be vigilant to thwart "such malpractices" and ensure that no room was left for any fraud.

Jayalalithaa alleged that the DMK had resorted to desperate ways of winning the elections as a poll survey indicated that the AIADMK would win the election.

She accused certain DMK ministers of grabbing the lands of the middle class and poor people and claimed the livelihood of the people and free movement was in jeopardy in the state.

It was sad that the government was not focusing on vital issues, including inter-state water disputes such as Cauvery, Periyar Dam, Palar and the Hogenakkal drinking water project. The Chief Minister was more worried about his family problems than people's problems, she alleged.
