PUDUCHERRY: The manner in which criminal activities are carried out in Puducherry is becoming complex day by day, said Senior Superintendent of Police (Law and Order) B Srikanth here on Sunday. Addressing a press conference on the arrest of a person in connection with the kidnap of an engineering student, he said the criminals used airplanes and ships for their escape, making the police job highly challenging.
Elaborating on the rescue of Amit Kumar Porwal (21), he said the mastermind of the kidnap was Raja Ganesh (23), a diploma holder in computer engineering. Ganesh had been to Singapore and was also part of a racket which promised jobs to youth in foreign countries. On the first of its kind kidnap in Puducherry, Srikanth said that police took three days to pin down the people involved, as they wanted the boy alive.
The SSP said that when Ganesh and his friend Hari (24) came to know about the police search, they wanted to wind up the operation quickly. At one stage, Ganesh told Amit to ask his father to withdraw the case. On Saturday, when a police team chased the gang travelling in a car, they threw the boy out near Villupuram.On the easy money and the rise in chain-snatching incidents, Srikanth said that one could easily get Rs 12,000 for a sovereign of gold.
Anil Kumar Porwal, uncle of the kidnapped student, said that the family would never forget the role of the police in getting Amit back. He also thanked the media and public for their support. Amit said that he was manhandled by the kidnappers.
