CHENNAI: Chief Minister and DMK president M Karunanidhi on Monday charged that AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa had decided to go on a fast for Sri Lankan Tamils only with an eye on the ensuing Lok Sabha elections.
Referring to the statement of Jayalalithaa that the Central and State governments had no real concern for the Lankan Tamils and that they had failed to extend timely help to them, Karunanidhi cited her statement dated October 15, 2008.
In that statement, Jayalalithaa had said that Centre had no powers to interfere in the internal affairs of Sri Lanka. If India does so, then other countries would interfere in her internal affairs.
Recalling these remarks made by the AIADMK leader, Karunanidhi said: “When Jayalalithaa made these statements, there were no elections doing the rounds.
But now, Lok Sabha elections have become the reason for her to attack Sri Lankan government.” To a question about CPI national secretary D Raja’s charge that both DMK and PMK had been shedding crocodile tears for Sri Lankan Tamils while supporting the Central government on its policy towards the issue, Karunanidhi, said: “Raja, who had entered the Rajya Sabha with the help of DMK and PMK, may level more such charges in future. One should learn from him how to betray an alliance party.”
