MADURAI/CHENNAI: While votes polled on Wednesday are waiting to be counted on Saturday, the DMK men and admirers of the party’s candidate M K Azhagiri have already declared him as winner and crowned him by renaming the ancient district of Madurai as `Azhagiriyar Mavattam’.
The fawners and flatterers, who had found innumerable prefixes and sobriquets to describe their Annan, `Anjanenjar’, outdid themselves on Friday. Giant sized posters appeared in various parts of the city with multi-coloured portraits of Azhagiri with a massive garland fitting the portrait.
“We are 200 per cent sure of Anjanenjan’s (braveheart’s) victory in the elections.
Thalaivar has already announced he will win with a margin of over 3.5 lakh votes,’’ said a senior party functionary, who has indirectly sent a message to Anjanenjan to rename Madurai as Azhagiriyar district.
His supporters across the city are bubbling with enthusiasm and awaiting Saturday’s victory celebrations.
Azhagiri’s supporters have a history of resorting to violence. People wonder whether the DMK strongman will be able to rein his loyalists, should he win the elections.
“Most problems don’t come directly from Azhagiri, but from his supporters,’’ said a trader at the Madurai Periyar bus stand under condition of anonymity.
Ever since the EC announced the election schedule, DMK functionaries and cadres in the southern districts of the State (the area coming under his purview as organising secretary), have been urging the party high command to name Azhagiri as the candidate of the party for the Madurai Lok Sabha constituency.
Naturally the hierarchy conceded to the plea with alacrity.
