PUDUCHERRY: The golden jubilee of Palynology Laboratory of the French Institute of Pondicherry (IFP), the only centre devoted to tropical Palynology in India , will be celebrated through two events in December and January.

A multidisciplinary training programme “Poltrain” will be organised from December 7 to 10.

This programme will provide a learning platform for students of Biology, Geology and History and Archeology on various aspects of Palynology and its applications. The inauguration will take place on December 7.

On the occasion a pollen reference collection will be named in honour of Dr G Thanikaimoni who played a key role in building this repertory.

The keynote speakers will be Naresh Mehrotra, Director, Birbal Sahni Institute of Palynology (BSIP), Lucknow, who will speak on “Advancements in Palynological research for Hydrocarbon Exploration in India” and Raymonde Bonnefille, a senior paleoecologist from the CEREGE-CNRS, France who will speak on “Tropical palynology/Paleoecology: where we started, where are we going?.”

The Palynology Laboratory was established in 1960 as a centre for basic and advanced research in the field of pollen studies.

Ph Guinet was its head while its founder-director was Jean Filliozat.
