TIRUPPATTUR: Believe it or not. There are two elementary schools functioning under one roof at Samban Oorani Melkarai, near Tiruppattur in Sivaganga district. One of them is on the verge of closure as it has only three students and a headmaster.
The East Car Street Elementary School and Nagappa Marudappa Elementary School were functioning as separate schools 10 years ago. Since there was a dispute that Nagappa Marudappa School was in a private building, it was shifted to the same campus as Sambaran Oorani Melkarai school.
During the past few years, both schools have been functioning on the same campus. The East Car Street Elementary School has 25 students on its roll with one headmaster and a teacher. The Nagappa Marudappa School has three students with one headmaster.
This perhaps is the only campus with two elementary schools. Now the future of Nagappa Marudappa School is at stake and the locals say that it should be shifted to some other area where there is no elementary school.
They have appealed to their MLA and Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowmments K R Periyakaruppan, to sort out this problem.
