COIMBATORE: Noted writer G Subramaniam aka Nanjil Nadan has been selected for Sahitya Akademi award for his short story collection titled ‘Soodiya Poo Soodarka’ for 2010.

Hailing from Veeranayanamangalam village in Thovalai taluk, Kanyakumari district, Nanjil Nadan was born in a poor peasant family.

After his schooling, he completed his UG at Nagercoil South Travancore (ST) Hindu College.

Thereafter, he finished his PG in mathematics from Madras University. And he moved to Mumbai hunting for a job.

Initially, he worked as a casual at Mumbai district collector’s office and at a private company on daily wages.

Nadan rose to dizzy heights from a humble beginning to become the sales manager of WH Brady & Co in Mumbai.

On job, he travelled the length and breadth of the country to get a transfer to Coimbatore office as branch manager in 1989.

Even after his retirement in 2005, he continued to work as a representative of a Surat-based industrial organisation.

Nadan’s maiden novel ‘Thalaikeezh Vikithangal’ published in 1977 did sell like hot cake.

Interestingly, a film titled ‘Solla Marantha Kathai’ with director Cheran in the lead role and directed by Thankar Bachan was based on this novel.

His novel ‘Ettuthikkum Mathayaanai’ was translated into English as ‘Against all odds’ in 2008.

Nadan has to his credit 112 short stories and two poem collection ‘Mannooli Paambu’ and ‘Pachai Nayagi’ and a book on ‘Naanjil Nattu Vellalar Vazhkai’.
