PUDUCHERRY: Exhorting policemen to demonstrate courage, honesty and care and above all uphold law of the land while carrying out their duties, Lieutenant Governor Dr Iqbal Singh said the police should give priority to protect vulnerable sections of society.

Addressing 168 newly recruited police constables, including five women, after the passing out parade here on Saturday, he said, “Members of the minorities, women and children, the elderly, the handicapped, the destitute and the homeless - these are the people who are highly vulnerable and rely on you for their protection. It is your bounden duty to offer assistance to them.”

He asked them to resolve to always work towards protection of human rights and safeguard the dignity of every individual and act  in accordance with the democratic values of the country.

Iqbal Singh said the police force these days functioned with limited  manpower and work pressure was enormous, but that should not stop them from being society- friendly.

Pointing out that the newly trained police personnel might face increasingly tough challenges, he told them not to let their vision get blurred in the face of pressure or monotony of work.

Asking them to work in strict accordance with law in a fair and selfless manner, he said bravery and decisiveness in the face of critical situations always came from moral courage.

He also urged them to keep abreast of new developments and enhance their analytical power through continuing education to handle cases of complex crimes and domestic violence.

Most of the recruits had been previously employed as home guards and they had been absorbed as police constables, based on the 25 per cent reservation for them.
