HOSUR: Flood alert has been sounded in Hosur and Krishnagiri regions along the side of Thenpenniyar river on Sunday following the water level in Kelavarapalli dam increasing at alarming levels.

To avoid any untoward incidents, the Public Works Department (PWD) has released water from Kelavarapalli dam.

Kelavarapalli dam, which has been constructed across Thenpenniyar river, is located 7-km away from the Hosur industrial town. The river originates in the neighbouring Karnataka.

Following heavy rains in Karnataka in the recent days, the water inflow to Kelavarapalli dam increased in the past two days.

According to Sundaram, Assistant Executive Engineer of PWD, the current water inflow to the dam stood at 1,000 cusecs while the outflow also has been maintained at the same level. The water has been exited through all six shutters of the dam.

The public in the low lying areas like Pathakotta and Thorapalli have been alerted as the water from the dam has been released on Sunday.

The storage level of the dam is 44 feet while the water level increased to 43 feet, forcing the PWD to release the water on emergency.

Krishnagiri Reservoir and Sathanur dam also get water through Thenpenniyar river.

Currently the water level in Krishnagiri Reservoir stood at 32.3 feet against the full storage capacity of 47 feet, the official said.
