THOOTHUKUDI: The long-awaited Thoothukudi-Colombo mechanised sailing vessel (MSV) resumed cargo service after three years on Saturday.
The MSV, popularly called the thoni service, was suspended mainly due to the political unrest in Sri Lanka and competition from modern cargo carriers.
It made its last trip to Colombo in 2008.
Following the return of peace in the island nation, vessel operators took upon themselves to resume the service.
Their efforts bore fruit when MSV Raj set sail for Colombo. A total of 250 tonnes of turmeric, salt, tamarind, red chillies and other consumer goods were loaded on it.
The MSV set off from the Old Port, with a 10-member crew led Master Beno of Thoothukudi. Snow Shipping Services, Thoothukudi, undertook the chartering and cargo handling services.
The vessel would reach the Colombo port within 20-22 hours after departure and would return immediately after unloading the cargo, said MSV Owners’ Association president S Princeton Fernando.
“As it happens to be the first trip, chances of bringing back goods from Colombo may be very low,” he added.
According to him, the venture has sent positive vibes and has brought new hope to thoni workers.
“Besides, it is reassuring that this trade will flourish again and we expect a minimum of two services to Colombo. The government should support us through various schemes and facilities in order to keep this service afloat,” he urged. The vessel was flagged by Princeton.
