PUDUCHERRY: In a bid to counter overcharging of fees for CENTAC-sponsored students, former education minister S P Sivakumar has urged the government to enable students to tender the fee on the CENTAC premises itself.  In a statement, he said that overcharging of fee by some medical colleges had become an issue in Puducherry, with students sponsored by CENTAC finding the fee much higher than that displayed on the CENTAC website and the difficulty in getting themselves admitted.

Even in the past, students sponsored by CENTAC were charged almost double the fee fixed by the fee committee, by adding a section titled ‘others’. The latter consisted of charges towards transportation, instruments, books, field visits and other related expenses. In fact, a few years ago, one CENTAC-sponsored scheduled caste student attempted suicide when faced with a huge fee at the time of admission in a self-financing medical college.

Even in the Assembly, such overcharging had become the cause of debate between members, following which the self-financing colleges were directed to make certain categories in the ‘others’ section optional, thereby bringing down the cost of the total fee. Issues of Overchanging and other evasive ways adopted by some colleges, could be checked if admissions happened on the Centac premises.
