CHENNAI: Godfrey Phillips India on Thursday announced the launch of the Godfrey Phillips Bravery Awards in Tamil Nadu.
At a press conference, Harmanjit Singh, general secretary, Godfrey Phillips Bravery, said, "The Godfrey Phillips Bravery Awards were instituted in 1990 to honour exceptional bravery exhibited by citizens. Twenty years on, the movement continues to inspire people of all ages, beliefs and origins and celebrate the spirit of bravery."
The goal of the awards is to inspire people with real life stories of bravery and create positive role models in society, he said.
With the company's plans to include four new States - Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Jharkhand and Jammu and Kashmir - the reach of the awards is set to be expanded this year.
The company has invited nominations from the region for the following list of awards: Physical Bravery Award that felicitates individuals who risked their lives to save others or prevent damage to property; Social Acts of Courage Award that commemorates people who have persistently battled social evils like child marriage, illiteracy and dowry; Mind of Steel Award that honours people who broke away from the shackles of limitations, physical or otherwise to perform extraordinary deeds; people who believed in the courage of conviction against all odds; the Amodini award for women/organisations that have worked for financial empowerment of women from socially backward classes, the Social Lifetime Achievement Award; which is presented at the national level, to acknowledge people who have dedicated themselves to change the society.

Winners will be selected by a panel of judges comprising IAS officers, retired judges of the Supreme Court and High Court, social workers and media personalities. The awardees will receive cash prizes and merit certificates for their exemplary acts of bravery.
The awards have so far covered 16 States, including Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Uttaranchal, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, West Bengal, Goa and Himachal Pradesh.
