PUDUCHERRY: The ruling Congress suffered another setback with one of its members joining Rangasamy’s All India NR Congress (AINRC) on Friday.

G Nehru of Congress and the head of Manithaniya Makkal Iyakkam on Friday joined AINRC, strengthening the party for the forthcoming Assembly polls.

Nehru who contested as an independent candidate gave a tough fight to R Siva of DMK in Orleanpet constituency in the previous elections. Nehru secured 6,549 votes to come second to Siva’s 8,549 votes. In fact, Nehru a Congress aspirant fought as a Congress rebel candidate when the constituency was allotted to DMK in the alliance.

Now, anticipating the seat getting allocated to DMK again and with the repeat of the 2006 Assembly elections happening in all likelihood, he has decided to switch loyalities and join the Congress’ rival camp, namely the AINRC. Expectant of getting the ticket this time and with the backing of Rangasamy’s AINRC, he hopes to win.

It’s actually a win-win situation for both Nehru and Rangasamy with the former getting to fulfil his political aspirations and the latter getting a strong contender against the Congress-DMK candidate.
