PALANI: Irulayi, daughter of Dhandapani from Kothaimangalam, near Palani, secured 381 out of 400 in Nursing to become the topper in the state in the subject.
Sadly, she was not even aware that she secured the first rank till media persons tried to reach her out since she was away in a spinning mill working to earn few extra penny to support her family.
Irulayi secured 137 in Tamil, 97 in English, 160 in Chemistry, 144 in Fundamental Science and 381 in Nursing.
Her father and mother Chinnammal were coolies.
Both her elder sisters were married and she has younger sister and brother with her younger sister already quit her studies to support her parents.
Irulayi and her younger brother Muthumari are the ones who pursue their school studies among their entire siblings.
When the media persons went to Kothaimangalam to meet Irulayi, they were told that she went to a spinning mill at Pethanaickenpatti. Hence, they visited her in the mill.
Talking to media persons, Irulayi said that she was not aware about her state rank. Irulayi thought that she could see the results in the evening, so that she may not lose a day’s earnings, she said.
