MDMK general secretary Vaiko called on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the Writers' Buildings here Friday and backed her stand that the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) regime had no moral right to continue.
"I fully endorse her view that the UPA government has no moral right to continue because of corruption and other things," Vaiko told the media after meeting the Trinamool Congress chief.
He said he had met Banerjee to express his solidarity.
Stressing on the crucial role of the regional political parties in the next Lok Sabha polls, he said: "In future elections, the combination of regional parties will play a major role in shaping the government."
Praising Banerjee, he said she championed the cause of the states.
The MDMK (Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) leader called for giving more powers to the states.
"To promote the spirit of democracy the States should be given more powers and the central government should not try to bulldoze them," he said.
The MDMK has one Lok Sabha member from Tamil Nadu.
Inviting Rajapaksa insult to Tamil sentiments: Vaiko
MDMK general secretary Vaiko Friday took exception to the central and BJP-led Madhya Pradesh governments inviting Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa and said it was an "insult" to Tamil sentiments.
Vaiko regretted that the Madhya Pradesh government invited the Sri Lankan president despite objections from the MDMK, which considers Rajapaksa guilty for the alleged torture of Tamils in Sri Lanka.
"The attitude of the UPA government is also an insult to Tamil sentiment," Vaiko told mediapersons here after calling on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the state secretariat Writers' Buildings.
