The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) has temporarily disconnected the electricity supply to the Rajaji Amusement Park owned by the Madurai Corporation for non-payment of dues.
The power supply was snapped on November 1 and, sources said, the civic body had not made the payment till Sunday. When Express contacted the TANGEDCO SE M Balasubramanian, he said the Corporation had taken action on the consumers who had not paid dues within the grace period even after a warning issued by the TANGEDCO.
He said the financial department of the Corporation could have taken action. The Rajaji Park was in tariff V classification that was under the general and commercial category.
“We have made the payment to the Superintendent of the Corporation, but he did not remit the charges,” an official of the Park management said. Deputy Commissioner K Sambavi told Express that she would take measures to restore the supply.
The visitors to the park, especially women complained, “This is the only place to entertain our children and it does not have lighting. We came to know of the snapping of power supply only after paying the entry fee ,” M Umaselvi of Goripalayam said on Sunday.
TANGEDCO officials said different government departments in the district owed the Power Corporation about Rs 50 crore towards electricity consumption charges. These included police stations, government offices, local body offices, primary health centres and a few schools.
