Turbulent times in different parts of the world today were posing a huge challenge to peace groups, CPI leader D Raja said here on Friday.
Speaking at the inaugural function of a peace conference organised by the All India Peace and Solidarity Organisation (AIPSO), the CPI national secretary said India had supported the basic tenets of peace right from ancient times.
Raja raised concerns over the rising defence budgets of various countries, including India, at a time when focus needed to be shifted to education and health sectors.
Addressing delegates at the conference, the CPI leader said there was a need for reforms in the United Nations (UN). Africa and Asia should have permanent representations in the UN Security Council, he said.
CPI(M) Politburo member Sitaram Yechury, who was also present for the inauguration of the conference, said instead of spending on the defence sector, nations should concentrate on solving the hunger crisis.
Yechury added that India should continue with its foreign policy and any deviation due to external pressure should be questioned by the AIPSO.
CM N Rangasamy inaugurated the conference. Over 300 delegates from 19 states were taking part at the national conference while delegates from Cuba, Vietnam, Pakistan and Nepal were participating in the international conference.
