While a lower court in Madurai, on Monday, issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against Durai Dhayanidhi, son of Union Minister M K Alagiri in the multi-crore illegal granite quarrying scam, the DMK district secretary of Thoothukudi N Periasamy was arrested after he surrendered at the South Police station in Thoothukudi in connection with a land grab case .

Durai, the former managing director of Olyumpus Granites in Madurai, has been evading arrest for the past few months.

The Deputy Superintendent of Police (prohibition enforcement wing) filed a petition seeking non-bailable warrant (NBW) of arrest against Durai before the Judicial Magistrate at Melur.

Opposing the plea of the DSP, Durai filed a petition before the Judicial Magistrate last week stating that he was being politically victimised becasue he was the son on a union minister and the grandson of DMK chief M Karunanidhi.

On Monday, Melur Judicial Magistrate V Jayakumar issued a NBW against Durai and nine others, including S Nagarjan, one of the partners of the firm.

Meanwhile, DMK district secretary N Periasamy, whose house was searched by the police in connection with a land case, surrendered at the South Police station here on Monday.

According to the police, 13 persons, including Periasamy, his son N P Jegan and relatives grabbed 10.33 acres at Mullakadu worth Rs 20 crore owned by C.Mohammed Fathima (70) of Caldwell Colony, Thoothukudi, by forging documents.Consequently, Mohammed Fathima lodged a complaint with Thermal Nagar Police station which was later transferred to the District Crime Branch. Following this, cases were registered against Periasamy and his associates under various sections of the IPC.

After Madurai bench refused bail to Periyasamy, special team intensified its search for him.

In this backdrop, news spread that Periasamy will surrender at ‘Geetha Hotel’ in Polpettai. But, the DMK district secretary came to Thoothukudi south police station around 3.45 pm and surrendered before the police. He was interrogated for an hour and later arrested.

He was then produced before JM Court-I,where Judge Mayakrishnan remanded him to Judicial custody for 15 days up to October 29.

Following the order, he was taken to Palayamkottai Central Prison.
