Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday urged people not to panic over reports of rising dengue cases. In a statement, she said her government was taking all steps to curb the spread of dengue. The CM also chaired a meeting of ministers and top government officials to review efforts on dengue control and awareness creation.
“I assure the people that my government is taking every step necessary to contain dengue and I urge them not to panic,” read Jayalalithaa’s statement. She dismissed as baseless media reports citing increased incidence of dengue, saying they were reactionary and based on preliminary blood tests rather than the standard tests.
Contrary to media reports, Jayalalithaa said, there were 59 positive cases of dengue. These patients were receiving proper treatment and were recovering. So far this month, 400 positive cases of dengue have been identified and all of them have been cured, she added. She also noted that not every fever was a case of dengue.
Outlining measures taken by her government to arrest the spread of dengue, Jayalalithaa said all primary health centres and government hospitals had been stocked with medicines to combat the virus, and adequate blood supply was being ensured.
