Robbers decamp with jewels worth 10 lakh

Robbers struck at three places in Katpadi police station limits and decamped with gold jewels worth around ` 10 lakh.

In the first incident, miscreants broke open the backdoor of the house of a retired teacher, Chandra Sekaran, at Bharanespuram and decamped with 28 sovereign of gold jewels. The incident came to light when Sekaran returned  from Chennai at about 10 pm on Saturday after seeing off his wife, Selva Priya, to Canada, said the police.

In another incident, robbers gained entry into the house of Stanley John, a Railways employee, at Mettukulam and stole 10 sovereign of jewels. The miscreants also robbed two sovereign of jewels from the tenant of John’s house.

Katpadi police registered cases in this regard and are investigating.

2 Killed in Lightning

Tiruvannamalai: A woman and her son were killed and two injured after being struck by lightning in Madipakkam village near Cheyyar on Sunday. Two goats were also killed in the incident.

The deceased were identified as Arul Mozhi (44), wife of Lakshmanan and resident of Madipakkam, and their son Gokila Krishnan (18), a BE student of a private engineering college. Arul Mozhi’s elder son Venkatesan (22) and his friend Vasudevan (25) sustained injuries in the incident.

The incident occurred at about 2.45 pm when Arul Mozhi and three others were working, seated under a tree on their agriculture land, police said.

While Arul Mozhi and Krishnan died on the spot, the injured were admitted at the Government Hospital in Kancheepuram, police added.

Cheyyar Tahsildar A Prabhakaran said the district administration would sanction `1 lakh each to the kin of the deceased, from the Natural Calamity Relief Fund.
