Woman official slapped, 1 held

A member of Naam Tamizhar Katchi was arrested here for allegedly slapping a woman executive engineer with slipper and damaging official property.

L Mani, a native of Nallavadu village, went to the district executive office, which is functioning in the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) building, on Monday evening, to complain about the poor quality of houses built under tsunami rehabilitation project at his village.  Reportedly there was a heated argument between him and Sujatha, executive engineer, in the office.

As the brawl intensified, at one point, Mani got angry and allegedly slapped Sujatha with his slipper and threw away the files on her table, besides causing damage to main door.

In the complaint lodged with the Cuddalore New Town Police, Sujatha said, “My colleagues and office staff ran into my room and defended me. Mani also threatened that he would kill me.” Mani is a member of Naam Tamizhar Katchi. A cadre of that party here claimed that Mani had been actively engaged in attempts to get better quality houses under the rehabilitation scheme for the tsunami affected people . 

A few days ago Mani sent a detailed complaint to the chief minister’s office regarding the alleged irregularities in the project work. Members of Naam Tamizhar Katchi said, “The executive engineer had insulted Mani, by way of swearing at him.Irked by this he slapped her.  “Further, engineer Sujatha has not given proper reply to Mani, who raised questions regarding the irregularities in building the houses for the tsunami-affected people.

Action should be initiated against her.” Police arrested Mani and registered case

under 294(b), 447, 427, 353, 355 and 506(1) Sections of the IPC.
