‘Illicit affair’ behind triple murder, say cops

The Villupuram police on Friday claimed to have cracked the sensational triple murder case that took place in 2008 and said that ‘illegal intimacy’ was behind the murders of the young couple and the girl’s father.

They said Silambarasan, one of the victims of the triple murder, aided the prime accused, Murugan, to strangle his newly wedded wife Lavanya and her father, before he too met the same fate in the hands of Murugan.

The case came to light after Murugan’s daughter Bhargavi exposed her father’s murder spree at a reality show in a Tamil satellite channel on May 28.

“Murugan, his wife Rajeswari and brother Mathiarasan surrendered before the executive magistrate and confessed about their deeds,” Villupuram Superintendent of Police N Baskaran told Express.

“Murugan said that he killed Sekar and Lavanaya in September, 2008 with the help of Silambarasan and one of his workers, Murthy. Forty days later, he eliminated Silamabarasan with the help of Murthy and Mathiarasan,” he said.

The modus operandi for all the three murders was the same - the victims were given excessive alcohol to drink and were strangled with a rope. “Murugan had an illegal affair with Lavanya before she married Silambarasan. After they eloped, Silambarasan and Lavanya stayed at Murugan’s house at Maharajapuram Kuchipalayam for nearly four months from August in 2008 when Silambarasan came to know about the affair,” said the SP quoting main accused Murugan’s confession.

In the meantime, Lavanya’s father Sekar, who came to know of Murugan’s relationship with his daughter, began asking back the money Murugan had borrowed from him. Murugan roped in Murthy and Silambarasan to get rid of Sekar.

A week after Sekar’s murder, the trio killed Lavanya.  Silambarasan aided Murugan in the killing as he had fallen out of love with Lavanya and wanted to move on. “Murugan lost faith over Silambarasan and grew suspicious that he was plotting to eliminate him,” said another police officer.

Soon, Silambarasan too fell victim to Murugan’s murderous intent.

Police registered a case against Murugan and his brother Mathiarasan, who helped him kill Silambarasan, under Sections 302 and 201 of IPC, while they booked Rajeswari under section 201 for not disclosing the murder to the police.
