Facilitated by DMK Member of Parliament T R Baalu, representatives of the fishermen associations from Tamil Nadu on Saturday met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi and handed over a memorandum.
They told the Prime Minister that 227 fishermen have been arrested by the Sri Lankan forces in the last three months and are now languishing in jails there. About 77 boats have also been seized. Urging the Prime Minister to prevail upon the Lankan government to release Tamil Nadu fishermen, they also demanded that the agreement reached between fishermen of Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka on exclusive fishing days be enforced on both sides so as to have a lasting solution to the problem.
